Ant-Man: Edgar Wright Reveals the Real Story Behind His Exit from the MCU Movie
'Ant-Man' Director Edgar Wright Opens Up About Creative Differences and His Decision to Leave Marvel Studios
For years, Edgar Wright was at the helm of an Ant-Man movie for Marvel Studios. However, in May 2014, the director announced his departure from the project due to creative differences. Wright's departure sparked curiosity among fans, and now, in a Reddit AMA, he reveals the 'real' reason behind his exit.
In the AMA, Wright explains that he and co-writer Joe Cornish had written the script long before Marvel became a household name. Their screenplay existed before the release of Iron Man. However, when they came to make the movie in 2014, Marvel had developed an established house style and working method that didn't align with the more unconventional heist movie they had envisioned. Wright felt that their beloved draft was fading away and decided it was best for someone else to take the helm.
'Our draft we loved was fading away, and I thought it better if someone else did it,' Wright said. 'I have never seen the film to this day, but don’t regret leaving.'
After Ant-Man, Wright went on to direct Baby Driver, a 2017 action-comedy that received critical acclaim. He then ventured into the world of documentaries with The Sparks Brothers (2021) and Last Night in Soho (2021).
Now, Wright is back in the action genre with The Running Man, an adaptation of Stephen King's 1982 novel. The film, set to open in US theaters this weekend, stars Glen Powell, Josh Brolin, Colman Domingo, and William H. Macy. But here's where it gets controversial... Wright's decision to leave Ant-Man has sparked debates among fans. Some argue that Marvel's established style might have been necessary for the success of the franchise, while others believe that Wright's vision could have brought a unique and refreshing take to the MCU. So, what do you think? Do you agree with Wright's decision, or would you have liked to see his version of Ant-Man come to life? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
