If the degrees between two points are known, then the number of degrees needs to be divided by 15 to get the difference in hours. If John lives at 120 degrees and Bob lives at 80 degrees, the difference is 40 degrees. 40 divided by 15 is just under 3 hours. That means they live two time zones away from each other.

Time zones are simply different areas of our planet that each set their clocks the same way. The times they use are called localized times. There are 24 time zones around the world and each of them sets their time one hour different from the next.

The world is divided longitudinally into time zones, with each hour difference roughly 15 degrees apart (one earth rotation, 360 degrees/ 24 hours). Due to some countries have half hour time zones, there are more than 24 times zones in the world.

For the most part, the United Kingdom is eight hours ahead of Los Angeles. In the winter, both use standard time, with Los Angeles on UTC —8 and the United Kingdom on UTC. In the summer, both use daylight saving time, Los Angeles on UTC —7 and the United Kingdom on UTC +1.

Central Time Zone, the largest one by area, encompasses 20 states, but only 10 of them are located entirely within zone's boundaries, all remaining states have some exceptions.
