N2 Reopens: Investigation into Heartbreaking KZN Crash Unveils Family Tragedy (2025)

A tragedy has unfolded on the N2 highway in KwaZulu-Natal, leaving five family members dead, including three young children. The Umzumbe River Bridge area has reopened, but the weight of the recent events lingers.

The fatal crash, which occurred on Friday, involved a head-on collision between a Suzuki light motor vehicle and a seven-seater minibus. Sadly, five lives were lost in the accident, all believed to be from the same family. Among the victims were three children, aged between 3 and 5 years old.

By Saturday, authorities were still working to piece together the details. They had not yet released updates on the condition of the survivors who were taken to the hospital, nor had they confirmed the identities of those who tragically passed away. The Road Traffic Inspectorate initially handled the scene, but the investigation has now been handed over to the police.

Ndabezinhle Sibiya, a spokesperson for the KZN Department of Transport, confirmed on Saturday morning that the road had been reopened after being closed for hours. However, many critical questions remain unanswered.

"We don’t have an update for those in hospital at this stage. And we don’t have the identities of those who have perished," Sibiya stated.

KZN MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, addressed the devastating event in a statement released on Friday night. He mentioned that his department was working closely with the Road Traffic Inspectorate team.

In addition to the three young children, two adults, believed to be their parents, also lost their lives. Two other occupants of the Suzuki – a woman and a 14-year-old boy – were transported to the hospital for treatment. From the seven-seater minibus, two people sustained injuries.

Duma confirmed that his department had deployed officials to coordinate with community leaders at the scene.

During the emergency response on Friday evening, motorists were urged to avoid the area while authorities managed the situation.

But here's where it gets controversial: The investigation is ongoing, and the details are still emerging.
