Vietnam Banh Mi Food Poisoning: Over 300 Sick from Salmonella (2025)

A food poisoning outbreak in Vietnam has sparked concern, with over 300 cases linked to popular banh mi stores. But here's where it gets controversial: the culprit is identified as Salmonella bacteria, a common foodborne pathogen.

The Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported that the number of affected individuals has risen to a staggering 316, with most cases stemming from two banh mi stores in Ho Chi Minh City. Authorities have confirmed the presence of Salmonella enteritidis and Salmonella spp. bacteria through blood and stool cultures from the patients.

Last week, a wave of hospitalizations occurred, with over 200 people experiencing abdominal pain, diarrhoea, vomiting, and fever after consuming banh mi. Thankfully, most patients have been discharged, but approximately 60 are still undergoing treatment. One severe case involves a patient with pre-existing health conditions, including pneumonia, hypertension, and atrial fibrillation, who is currently receiving intensive care at Gia Dinh People's Hospital. The patient has shown stability and has been taken off the ventilator.

The Health Department is taking proactive measures. They have directed hospitals and the HCM City Centre for Disease Control to collaborate with the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit. Together, they will conduct microbiological culture tests and gene sequencing to pinpoint the exact cause of the outbreak and investigate any other potential factors contributing to the food poisoning cases.

This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of food safety and the potential impact of foodborne illnesses. It raises questions about the role of regulatory bodies and the responsibility of food establishments in ensuring the safety of their products.

What are your thoughts on this outbreak? Do you think enough is being done to prevent such incidents? Feel free to share your opinions and experiences in the comments below!
